Building Brighter Futures for Vulnerable Children

Article

Nestled within BIRD’s offices in Geneva, the Foundation Apprentis d’Auteuil International (FAAI) operates discreetly yet with unwavering commitment. Its mission? To champion children’s rights and support vulnerable youth on their journey toward a brighter, more dignified future. We spoke with its Secretary General, Bénédicte Pansier.

A Troubling Global Situation

In a world shaken by conflicts, natural disasters, and growing poverty, children are often the first to suffer. According to recent international figures, over 244 million children are out of school. As early as 2005, UNICEF estimated that over 100 million children were living on the streets—a figure that is likely much higher today. Without access to education, healthcare, or protection, these children remain largely forgotten by social systems.

A Four Pillars Mission

In response to this alarming reality, FAAI directs its efforts toward the most vulnerable children, focusing on education, social inclusion, and professional integration through partnerships with local organizations. Founded in 2013 and recognized as serving the public interest, the foundation is the international arm of Apprentis d’Auteuil—a French organization that has been supporting disadvantaged youth for over 160 years.

FAAI operates in 12 countries with limited resources, relying on four complementary pillars: child protection and education, vocational training and professional integration, family support, and strong international advocacy for children’s rights. Rooted in co-construction and capacity-building, the foundation’s approach is clear: act deeply and sustainably while staying close to local realities.

We never act alone. Our strength lies in our field partners who understand better than anyone the needs of children in their countries”, emphasizes Secretary General Bénédicte Pansier.

Tangible Results

In 2024, FAAI supported nearly 20 projects—from Morocco to Cambodia, Senegal to Madagascar, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Lebanon. With its partners and donor support, FAAI helps children and young people transition from life on the streets to full reintegration—familial, social, or professional. A key focus is raising awareness among families, communities, and children about fundamental rights.

Changing Life Trajectories

In its latest activity report, FAAI highlights testimonies from several young beneficiaries. In Lebanon, Mary, a teenager, shares: “I used to think sports were only for men. Now I’ve learned that women are equal to men—and I love training.” In Mali, a former child in street situation explains: “My training allowed me to earn a certificate in photovoltaic electricity and enter the workforce.

These stories are a testament to FAAI’s tangible impact. Every young person empowered, and every project reinforced is a step forward—and a victory in its own.

Children’s Rights and Youth Integration in Geneva

Geneva was a natural choice for FAAI’s headquarters. As a global hub for human rights and host to numerous international organisations defending them, the city offers a powerful platform to advance children’s rights worldwide. Here, FAAI regularly engages with UN bodies like the Human Rights Council and the Committee on the Rights of the Child.

At BIRD in Vernier, FAAI found the ideal environment to further its mission and launch a local professional integration program. In Geneva alone, 900 to 1,000 young people drop out of school each year—quadrupling their risk of unemployment and poverty. To respond, FAAI created the BIRDHOUSE: a professional integration restaurant with three dining spaces within BIRD. Each year, it welcomes around fifteen school dropouts who receive dual training in restaurant-related professions.

Supported by caring professionals, these young trainees earn recognised qualifications (CFC or AFP) while serving 300 to 350 meals a day—showing that social impact can go hand in hand with excellence and quality.

« In just five years, 100% of our trained youth have secured employment! »
FAAI Secretary General, Bénédicte Pansier

A Project in Motion

As the Convention on the Rights of the Child marks its 35th anniversary, FAAI’s commitment remains stronger than ever. Its goal is to empower young people to shape their own futures—whether in Switzerland or abroad. In a world marked by constant crises, the Foundation stands for stability and deep-rooted action. It embodies hope for a different future—one where no child is left behind and every child can thrive and reach their full potential.
